What Is Re: Zero – Starting Life in Another World?

Since 2012, we have been entertained by the amazing characters in RE:Zero, also known as RE:Zero − Starting Life in Another World or RE: Life in a Different World From Zero

For those of you who may not be entirely familiar with RE:Zero, it is a story centered around hikikomori Natsuki Subaru. The term “hikikomori” is a common descriptor in Japanese culture to describe someone who has withdrawn from society.

Hikikomori are often known as young adults who live a life of reclusion in their parents’ homes. Hikikomori typically have an inability to attend work or school and rarely leave their houses.

Re:Zero’s Subaru ends up in an alternate world called Lugnica while making his way home from the store. There exists a world beyond the day-to-day of modern Japan, a world of beasts, magic, and an entire kingdom.

Originally a novel published in 2012, it soon became a light novel and manga in 2014, and an anime in 2016. The RE:Zero light novel series was the tenth-best-selling series in Japan from November 2015 and May 2016, where it sold over 250,000 copies.

Who Are the Characters in Re:Zero?

We’ve broken down some key information as well as biographies and backgrounds about our favorite characters from the series so that you can learn all about this universe’s most important players.

Who Is Natsuki Subaru?

Race: Human

Gender: Male

Age: 17 from Arc 1 to 4, 18 from Arc 5+

Height: 5’8”

Subaru is the protagonist and first character we meet in RE:Zero. A hikikomori, Subaru is introduced to us while on his way home from the store, where he stumbles into another world called Lugnica. He is able to return to his own world by way of an ability he is given: Return by Death. Subaru becomes a knight for Emilia and a knight of the Dragon Kingdom by title.

Subaru is a tall, fit young man from Japan who is fiercely loyal. In Japan, he became a shut-in following poor treatment from his peers. Harboring a sense of disappointment for his shortcomings, he became reckless, which ended up pushing people further away. When Subaru began high school, he found an opportunity to come back as a new person, but he struggled to build relationships and eventually began skipping classes.

In Lugnica, Subaru has another story. He wanted to use this new start to become the person he wanted to be: a white knight who could be seen as a hero! With his desire to be a hero, he projects his feelings toward Emilia and becomes overbearing. After an attempt to run away from his failures, he is persuaded by Rem to change and try again. Subaru does redeem himself and becomes a more considerate person, although he is still regarded as a weaker character.

Who Is Emilia?

Race: Half-Elf

Gender: Female

Age: Age Unknown

Height: 5’4.5”

Emilia is considered to be the main heroine of the story, as all of the major events include her in some way. Though energetic, she has a hard time trusting others, which has resulted in a tough outer shell forming. This solemn exterior contrasts with a fragile core that can lead her to react childishly to events in her life. After her triumphs protecting the Sanctuary, her character becomes much more confident and empowered!

Emilia is a candidate to be the 42nd King of the Dragon Kingdom of Lugnica. As a half-elf, she did not know her mother and father. What she did know was that her mother was a human, and her father was elven. She was raised by her elven aunt, Fortuna.

Who Is Puck?

Race: Spirit

Gender: Male

Age: 420 from Arc 1 to 4, 421 from Arc 5+

Height: 3’6”

Puck is a spirit that plays the role of a parent to Emilia. During the fourth arc, Puck broke their contract in order to remove the seal of power that was guarding Emilia’s memories. This allowed Emilia to stand up to the Witch of Greed Trial … at the expense of putting Puck into a long deep sleep in a Pyroxene Crystal.

Puck began life as a humanoid being but was turned into an artificial spirit of fire. His spirit drew large amounts of mana from Emilia, who forgot that she could use magic, thinking that Puck drew his energy from the world. He could be seen between normal work hours, but he was also called outside of that time frame during emergencies.

Who Is Beatrice?

Race: Spirit

Gender: Female

Age: Over 400

Height: 4’7”

Beatrice is a spirit and former caretaker of the Forbidden Library in Roswaal’s Mansion. She is an artificial spirit that was created by the Witch of Greed for an unknown purpose. Beatrice was told to wait in the library for a person who would provide her with salvation. She was met by Subaru, who was able to talk her into being his contracted spirit.

Through Beatrice’s time in the library, she was subjected to many people who wanted to take her out or use her for her power. Her specialty in magic is Yin magic: to teleport and manipulate time.

Who Is Otto Suwen?

Race: Human

Gender: Male

Age: 20 from Arc 1 to 4, 21 from Arc 5+

Height: 5’10”

Otto joins the group in the third arc, in which he and Subaru initially clash. Otto later becomes a supporter of Subaru, helping him to defeat Roswaal. Otto is able to hear non-human voices, which resulted in him hearing only constant sounds and becoming an emotional void. He was taught how to write as a means to communicate.

By the age of 10, Otto was finally able to differentiate between what he was hearing and understanding the power he possessed. When he shared his abilities with his brother, he was made into a spectacle. Eventually, Otto was forced to leave his hometown.

Who Is Ram?

Race: Oni

Gender: Female

Age: 17 from Arc 1 to 2, 18 from Arc 3 to 4, 19 Arc 5+

Height: 5’1”

Rem’s sister Ram is a maid. While initially being a neutral character who didn’t do anything to help or hinder Subaru, she eventually became a vital supporter. She was born a prodigy with exceptional talent. Despite her abilities, she kept a level head and protected her younger sister — at the expense of losing her horn.

Ram is a clairvoyant who can connect with anyone that she chooses. There are a few exceptions, though, such as strong-minded people. She also shares a special bond with her twin sister in being able to share thoughts and feelings.

Who Is Echidna?

Race: Human

Gender: Feale

Age: Over 400

Height: Unknown

Echidna, also known as the Witch of Greed, is introduced later in the series as an antagonist. She attempted to be close to Subaru in order to gain access to his powers of Return by Death. Echidna began experimenting with ways to become immortal by transferring her soul into another body.

She was a mentor to Roswaal after saving him from mana poisoning. Echidna was responsible for the creation of Puck and Beatrice.

Who Is Rem?

Race: Oni

Gender: Female

Age: 17 from Arc 1 to 2, 18 from Arc 3 to 4, 19 Arc 5+

Height: 5’0.5”

Rem is a maid like her sister, Ram. She was saved by Subaru despite her skepticism of him and later gained feelings for him. She was put into suspended animation and subsequently suffered from amnesia.

Rem was rescued by her sister Ram moments before execution by their people. As a result, she was overshadowed by her sister's display of power and virtuosity. Despite being treated differently by their community, their family remained on good footing with one another. Once Rem and Ram lost their parents, Rem became closer to her sister.
